..that is the question.
I am generally a little agressive in the car, particularly on London's roads. This is to the extent that I had a little bump at christmas. Would this agressiveness translate onto a bike and get me killed? My confidence was really rocked by that little bump. Perhaps some ADT lessons and the test would give me back some of that confidence.
Assuming I ignore that whole issue, it's a lot of money to spend purely on me. My wife will see little benefit and in fact I can't see much in the way of objective benefit either. It comes down to 'I just want one', which is selfish and just a bit silly. Then again, it's not like we're strapped for cash.
Let's just say I do go for it. I think I'd wait to get a bike until after I've passed the test. I want to buy a 600cc bike (in that region anyway) and I'm told there's little value in getting a 125 for practice before I pass the test. I'm told I'd pick up bad habits and also the riding style is completely different on a bigger bike. So what kind of bike? I want a Triumph Thunderbird, because the style just appeals to me aesthetically, but I can understand that they might not be a good learner bike. They're at least 3k, so I don't want to drop it. They're nearly 900cc, which is probably a little more power than I'd really want, plus the insurance jumps a bit with the extra size engine.
I was thinking something like a Honda Hornet, or similar sportsy tourer as a first bike for a year or two. Then think about a more aesthetic machine later on.
I think that will be my plan: take some ADT lessons in a car, go for the bike test, buy some 600cc sports tourer then see how that goes.
