The Modern Kitten Society

Cheers Bayard: link

Plugging into a cyber-punk nightmarish world is one way of looking at it. I sometimes think of it as a 'kitten society' (I made that term up today to describe the system).

When you domesticate a cat, it effectively stays as a kitten (or regresses as in our cat). It becomes dependant, expecting dinner to be ready and a knee to sit on. All of it's needs are met with no effort on it's part. When something doesn't go as the animal expects then it gets all stressed. Imagine that same animal in the wild - it'd last 2minutes tops.

We are happily allowing ourselves to be domesticated in the same way. We have expectations and get stressed when these are not met. It appears to be worse the better off you are because you can afford to have higher expectations and you have further to fall when they're not met. We are the kittens but there is no owner: a dangerous place for our sanity? Probably.
